The Gessner Corridor Reconstruction project is set to bring exciting major improvements to South Gessner Road from Richmond Avenue to Buffalo Bayou. Houston Public Works is seeking community input during the engagement phase to help shape the project. Residents, business owners and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in an online survey and share feedback before the December 13 deadline.
The project focuses on enhancing mobility, safety, and infrastructure along the corridor. Planned updates include modernizing utilities and pavement, increasing drainage capacity to reduce flooding, and improving pedestrian safety with better crossings and paths. Existing mature trees will be preserved, and additional shade trees will be planted to create a more comfortable environment.
Key goals include improving intersection designs for safer operations, supporting METRO BOOST enhancements for faster and more reliable transit, and addressing community needs with added capacity where practical. The project is divided into three segments:
- Segment 1: Westheimer to Buffalo Bayou
- Segment 2: Richmond to Westheimer
- Segment 3: Gessner at Westheimer
Each segment has two options under consideration, with the most significant difference in Segment 3. While both Segment 3 options include pedestrian paths, upgraded METRO stops, and road reconstruction, Option B proposes a grade-separated interchange—an overpass or underpass designed to separate traffic flows. This option would impact nearby properties significantly, making community input especially important.
