A Historic Start
Located at 10770 Westheimer Rd., the new Westchase location of Goodwill marks a significant shift from its former Piney Point storefront, offering ample space for its expanding operations. Prior to the grand opening, the store had already been active, accepting donations and offering a sneak peek to eager shoppers. According to Goodwill Houston representatives, the soft opening in Westchase District was the most successful of any Goodwill Houston store opening, even without marketing. This success was attributed to Goodwill Houston’s loyal customer base and the anticipation among Westchase District residents. Opening a location in Westchase District was a strategic move for Goodwill. “Along the Westheimer corridor, we have a store in River Oaks, Briargrove, and Highway 6,” said Barbie Parker. “The Westchase location now places our stores on Westheimer between 4 and 5 miles apart, almost perfectly centered. We could not imagine a more ideal spacing, geographical location, or building.”
Focused on the Mission
With a workforce of 24 employees and four managers, the new Goodwill Westchase location aims to further the organization’s mission of providing free education, training, and job opportunities for people facing barriers to employment. This includes individuals with mental or physical disabilities, older workers, veterans, at-risk youth, and formerly incarcerated individuals. “We are excited to open the Westchase store that will support our overall mission. Thanks to generous donations and purchases, our free programs and job training services will continue to serve the Houston community,” Parker added.
Special Guests and Fun Prizes
Goodwill’s grand opening event featured a lineup of surprise guests, including Houston Rockets’ mascot Clutch, members of the Clutch City Dancers, and former Rockets player Moochie Norris. Representatives from Frito-Lay/PepsiCo sponsored the event and gave away swag items. As customers entered the store, they were given the opportunity to celebrate the grand opening by spinning a prize wheel to win free items. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was the highlight of the event. Goodwill Westchase’s store manager Jesús Chavez had the honor of cutting the ribbon amidst cheers and applause. The store also received an official certificate of recognition from Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones. The event drew notable figures from Goodwill Houston, including President and CEO Michael J. Winckler; Vice President of Operations Christopher E. Holman; Vice President of Fund Development & Community Relations Barbie Parker; and District Director Sherrie Smith.
